What are the different types of Submariners made by Rolex?
Rolex has produced several different models and variations of the iconic Submariner watch over the years. Here are some of the most notable types:
Classic Submariner
The classic Submariner is the original dive watch introduced by Rolex in 1953. It featured a 40mm stainless steel case, rotating bezel, and water resistance up to 300 meters. Early models had no date function, but later versions like the ref. 1680 included a date window.
Submariner Date
The Submariner Date, such as the ref. 116610, is essentially the same watch as the classic Submariner but with the addition of a date window at the 3 o'clock position. It has been a mainstay in Rolex's lineup since its introduction in the late 1960s.
Two-Tone Submariner
Rolex has also produced two-tone (Rolesor) versions of the Submariner, combining stainless steel and 18k yellow gold. Examples include the modern Submariner Date ref. 126613LB with a blue dial and bezel.
Special Edition Submariners
Over the decades, Rolex has unveiled various special edition Submariners with unique dials, bezels or materials. This includes watches like the "Kermit" 16610LV with a green aluminum bezel insert and the solid 18k yellow gold Submariner ref. 16618.
Larger Submariner Models
More recently, Rolex increased the case size of the Submariner to 41mm with the ref. 124060 no-date model and 126610 Submariner Date. However, the classic 40mm size is still offered as well.
Overall, while sharing the same core design, Rolex has created numerous variations of the Submariner tailored to different tastes and purposes over its 70+ year history.
